What the sign says

A railway crosses the road with no barrier to close it. The crossing itself is marked by a St Andrew's cross, and the rail keeps priority in every case.

The exam trap

Approach at a speed that lets you stop before the rails, and never move off unless you are sure you can clear the far side.
